Launching a startup feels less like firing a rocket and more like pushing a paper boat into a river and then sprinting alongside the bank hoping it doesn't sink.

That sentence is the entire emotional shape of the last month, and I am going to spend the rest of this post unpacking what it actually looked like in practice.

We launched Autter last month. By "launched" I mean we put up a website, told some people we knew, and waited to see what happened. No press. No Product Hunt. No Show HN. Just a URL, a waitlist form, and the particular anxiety that lives somewhere between "what if nobody comes" and "what if somebody does."

This is the second post in the Learnings from Building Autter series. The first was about names. This one is about the day the doors opened.

Here is what actually happened.

What We Did

We did not have a working product on day one. We had a GitHub App skeleton, a landing page, and a lot of conviction that the problem we were solving was real. The first thing Autter could actually produce was a manual codebase scan. Someone connects their repo, we run the scan internally, and send them a findings email with what we caught. No automation. No dashboard magic. Just us, the scanner, and a carefully written email.

Concierge delivery. Embarrassingly manual. We shipped it anyway because we needed something real to put in front of people, and a live product beats a perfect prototype that does not exist yet.

On the business side, I wanted to run an OOH campaign. Physical posters. Tanvi had thoughts about this. I ignored her thoughts and did it anyway. The waitlist picked up signups faster than either of us expected, from people we would never have reached through any channel we were already using.

We also started reaching out to people who have supported us over time and given us thoughtful, constructive feedback along the way. Not cold outreach. No spray and pray. Just an honest note: here is what we are building, want to be among the first to run a scan? That list is where our first real conversations came from. Not algorithms. People.

Lesson

Day 1 is not about reach. It is about the first ten conversations being with people who will tell you the truth.

Three Things That Worked

Being specific about what makes Autter different.

Not "AI code review" as a broad category. Specifically: Autter blocks the merge. It does not post a comment suggesting you look at something. It does not leave a note in the thread. It holds the gate until the conditions are met.

That single framing landed differently in every conversation we had. People stopped nodding politely and started leaning forward. There is a difference between a product that waves a flag and one that actually stands in the doorway, and that difference shows up in the first thirty seconds of a sales call.

We expected people to be put off by the friction. Instead, the findings emails got real replies. People forwarded them internally. Engineering leads were being looped in on the thread. One person replied with three follow-up questions and asked what our pricing looked like.

The manual step turned out to be the best demo we had, because it forced us to write findings in plain English and actually explain what we caught and why it mattered. Automation would have made the output more efficient and significantly less convincing.

We still do not fully understand why it worked as well as it did. The instinct when you are building a developer tool is to go where developers are online. Forums, Twitter, Hacker News. The OOH campaign went somewhere physical and completely different and it drove real waitlist signups from people we would never have touched otherwise.

I am not sure we can fully replicate it. It earned its budget. That is enough information for now.

Lesson

The thing that worked is rarely the thing the playbook said would work. Run the experiment, measure the result, do not over-rationalize the outcome.

Two Embarrassing Wastes of Time

The dashboard nobody asked for.

We spent almost a full week polishing the dashboard UI before we had a single user to show it to. The reasoning at the time was that we wanted to be ready when people started signing up.

The honest version is that building UI felt like progress and it was easier than talking to people who might say no. Nobody asked for the dashboard. Nobody knew the dashboard existed. We were building for an audience of zero.

The generic explainer post that went nowhere.

We tried to write an "AI-generated code is a growing security risk" explainer and pitch it to a few developer publications. It went nowhere. The piece was too broad, too obviously written by a startup trying to establish credibility before it had earned any, and it had nothing specific in it that only we could say.

Every paragraph could have been written by any company in this space. We killed it before it published, which was the right call. Two weeks too late, but the right call.

Lesson

If a paragraph could have been written by any of your competitors, it should not have been written by you.

The Real Lesson

Day 1 of a startup is not the launch. The launch is a moment. Day 1 is everything you find out about your product, your positioning, and yourself in the four weeks after the launch.

We found out that specificity beats category. We found out that a manual product can land harder than an automated one if the manual version forces you to be honest about what it does. We found out that an OOH campaign can outperform every developer marketing channel we already know how to run, for reasons we still cannot fully explain.

We also found out that polishing a dashboard for an audience of zero is the most comfortable form of procrastination available to a technical founder, and that writing a generic post is the second most comfortable.

The product is the product. The waitlist is real. The first ten users are the next thing. Everything else is content.
